Department of Managed Health Care

Maureen Glick is a business professional with over 20 years of experience in the private sector, including five years at the Institute on Aging (IOA) in San Francisco. In her role as Talent Acquisition Manager, Maureen created the Talent Acquisition Department, recruiting for Corporate, Technical, and Clinical positions. In 2020, she moved to Sacramento just before the pandemic shutdown; subsequently resigning from IOA in 2022 as employees were asked to return to work on-site. In February 2022, Maureen obtained a contractor position with Inseego Wireless that became a full-time job in May 2022. In her role as Talent Acquisition Manager, Maureen hired two people, whom she subsequently had to lay off. After receiving a spot bonus and job well-done accolades at the beginning of December 2022, Maureen was shocked when she was laid off two weeks later. Losing her job at Inseego had a huge impact on her life, “it made me feel like everything I did, no matter how good it was, just didn’t matter.”

Unemployed and older than her competitors, Maureen began the “hardest job search of my life.” Although she submitted her resume to private businesses, she was not getting responses. In interviews, panelists questioned her ability or stated she was unable to perform the job duties. Discouraged, Maureen started applying for state jobs. She registered in CalCareers, EDD’s CalJOBS, and utilized AJCC services. She attended job fairs, participated in online events, and took exams for state jobs. During this process, she realized working for the state was where she wanted to be, forcing her to look at her skills to see how they could move her to the next level.

In May 2023, Maureen attended the CalHR Work for California Job Fair at SETA Sacramento Works’ main office. She visited and talked with many of the participating departments, but felt she wouldn’t get a call back. As she was leaving, she walked by the Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) table. A DMHC Manager stopped Maureen and asked for her resume, her experience, and what she was looking for. The Manager shared with Maureen a new position would be opening and would like to talk with her more when the job opened. Maureen received a call from the Manager when the job opened encouraging her to apply. Maureen applied, went through 3 to 4 interviews, and was offered the job in early September 2023. In her role as Recruitment Analyst, she manages organizational development, recruitment effectiveness, and outreach.

Maureen shared: “The CalHR Job Fair was one of the best events I attended. The event was well organized, and had a lot of employers and job seekers; everyone was engaging and showed they were there to help. The event was open and welcoming where everyone wanted to help and made it clear they were there to help people find a job- I got a job with DMHC.”
